New England's 'Arboretum City'
My Emerald City's founder worked with a tree conservancy in Newport, Rhode Island, successfully transforming a small volunteer-led organization into a durable civic institution.
The first step: establishing a citywide arboretum (New England's first). Next, the conservancy helped properties across the city become accredited, resulting in over 30 arboreta citywide. This first-of-its-kind program supercharged public engagement and more than doubled private giving, allowing the organization to establish a heritage tree center at the high school and hire a full-time director.
